I can highly recommend Steve Marzahl as an instructor. I have found his teaching style to be very effective. He has the ability to translate his vast knowledge into clear and concise strategies that are easily understood. His presentations are thought through down to the very last detail. You’ll find his support materials to be well organized so that you can (and will) refer back to them often.
Time spent with Steve will leave you with the confidence to pursue your design/graphics goals and the tools necessary to accomplish them.

Steve Marzahl's 2-day Perspectives Workshop was a truly wonderful experience. I learned not only how to draw perspectives, but gained confidence in my drawing ability. As a Landscape Designer in a high-income market, the competition is polished and the clients are savvy. They often want to "see" what's being proposed before they are sold on a plan. The ability to show them a quick elevation of their proposed plan has been very effective in selling projects. I am now a better communicator through my sketches (even the "on the fly" ones, standing in a backyard!) I would highly recommend Steve's workshops.

Hey Stephen,
Steve has a talent for working with designers of all skill levels and will dramatically improve your drawing abilities whether you participate in the Two Day Perspective Seminar or private instruction. Through his 25 years experience as a landscape architect and his dedication to understanding and practicing perspective drawing, he has attained many tricks and shortcuts to achieving the professional results we are all looking for when it comes to presenting to the client. As well, I have found that my clients are capable of understanding the scope of their projects more clearly when I present to them with a perspective design. I do not consider myself an artist, yet the results I was able to achieve after working with Steve in the perspective seminar has dazzled many of my clients.

The Perspective Drawing seminar day with Stephen was delightful! It started very impressively and continued to deliver throughout the day. I would definitely take another class with him to continue to develop my skills and hope to have the opportunity to do so in the future.

Hi Steve:
I need to let you know about an additional comment about your class. First, I forgot to mention one of the most memorable things - I will never forget it - was your fantastic opening. I had never heard the song (that I recall) and was immediately intrigued. The words and message had a special meaning for me today, which didn't surprise me in that the Universe kind of works that way.
I loved your choreographed drawing, and the two arts together (yours and Bon Jovi's) were an incredible motivator for me. I am just starting at the very beginning of this process so I need to work through 100 sheets of the first practice concept you did with us to nail that down.
But the main point is, I am now inspired to do that and then grow from there. I hope you'll offer a similar class again somewhere (maybe Morton Arboretum?) so that I can continue to study this subject and work towards getting better at this skill.
Thanks for a great day!
Mary Jamieson
Hi Steve,
Perspective drawings are without a doubt the very best tool for communicating and selling landscape design ideas. Your perspective drawing class clearly presented this challenging subject in an easy-to-understand format. The overhead camera showing how you construct perspective drawings was a super way to show examples and your instructional notebook alone was worth the price of the class.

A one-day course on Perspective Drawing with Stephen Marzahl was a nice balance of lecture, demonstrations, and class exercises. In addition to being an experienced landscape architect, Stephen is a skilled artist and a teacher who cares deeply about communicating clearly with his students. A very helpful 50+ page booklet prepared by Stephen and given to each participant enabled students to smoothly move along with the lecture, even when challenging and technical points were under discussion. It also serves as a reference for novices like me who need to review the material and repeat the exercises in order to become more comfortable with perspective drawing. I heartily recommend that others wishing to expand their one- and two-point perspective drawing skills seek out Stephen as an instructor.

Hi Stephen,
Thank you again for the opportunity you gave me! I have been drawing every chance I get! It is truly magically for me, being someone who has never drawn, to be able to create a realistic composition with the ability to convey an idea to a client.
Step by step instruction was perfect for me. Furthermore, a good amount of time was spent on each step – nothing was missed & I feel I have a good grasp on each step of the elements in the perspective drawing process.
I really enjoyed the camaraderie and conferring with fellow landscapers/designers in such a close knit setting.
Sincerely,
Liz Grawe
Hi Stephen:
I just wanted to thank you again for the great class on Thursday and Friday. The reinforcement and the opportunity for me to further grasp your instructions/teachings that were started in the March session was so helpful. The 2 days really helped me to gain a deeper understanding of these concepts and the process. I will use the book again and again as a reference point as I continue to work at this.
You are really a patient, encouraging and generous teacher and I appreciate everything you have done. Your teaching style makes it really a comfortable environment for learning. No airs; nice and easy going style!
If I don't see you before year end, have a great holiday season. I'll see you at LDA events next year because I'm definitely going to join.
Thanks again for everything,
Mary

To Whom It May Concern:
Perspective can be a difficult topic, but Steve Marzahl’s 2-day workshop clarified the most important aspects. He made it easy to follow along with descriptive handouts, well-paced exercises, and individual oversight. The atmosphere is noncompetitive which allows students to readily learn from each other and ask questions as they arise. Steve shared many shortcuts and invaluable tips which were immediately useful to my work.
I only wish the workshop was 3 days!

Steve!
Glad to see that you are continuing to spread the confidence in the drawing world through your workshops!
Thanks for the greeting card over the holidays - all of us from the workshop love getting them from you!

Dear Steve,
I'm really glad I bit the bullet and spent the time and money for your class on grading, drainage, and hardscape. I learned much I hadn't a clue about, and you clarified some mysteries for me. Like all things in this business, it helps to know as much as possible, even if you don't intend to directly use the info yourself.
You have a generous, non-intimidating teaching style, so even though all the math gave me a headache, I was able to catch on.
Thanks for a great two days.

I am so happy that I was able to take your grading and drainage
workshop, I will never look at a wet patch in the lawn in the same way.
It was wonderful to see your pictures and the problem solving that
went into those projects. Very awesome!
Thank you,

Steve,
Thanks again for calling me about your grading and drainage workshop. I'm really glad I attended!
You are very generous and articulate in sharing your knowledge and experience.
I also wanted to add to my feedback that I thought the workbook was excellent: it was very helpful to have all the information on paper, and was great not to have to take copious notes while trying to focus on the presentation. It was great getting to know you a little better too!

Hi Steve,
I would like to reiterate how much I enjoyed your class on Grading, Drainage and Hardscapes.
I have a small residential landscape design business out of my home that I began about a year and a half ago. This is a career change for me. I have a degree in business from the University of Illinois and worked in sales until starting a family. I have always had a strong interest in horticulture and it certainly runs in my family as my grandparents, and my father when he was younger, worked at Balls Seed Co. in West Chicago for many years.
I completed the Home Landscape Design certificate program at the Morton Arboretum and especially enjoyed the advanced design courses taught by Carla Lynch Patterson (Gardens for People). I started out doing some design work for free for some friends in town, just to get the hang of it and feel more confident. At this point I work with just a few clients, taking it slowly.
The timing of your class was perfect. For me, this time of year is a slow time for doing design work and adds a level of enjoyment to being in a classroom. When it’s warm and sunny I have a hard time sitting still. Also, spending time with other Chicago area designers and learning from them, sharing stories and knowing that they also don't have all of the answers puts me more at ease in this industry where there are so many experts.
Answering clients questions about slopes and incorporating slopes and grades into a design and has been very intimidating. I so appreciate how you approached this topic and dealt with it in a mathematical way that made it so much easier to digest. I have always loved geometry. I was delighted to learn that so much of the calculation of slope, grade, etc. uses simple geometry to compute the needed information. The book that you put together as a handout for this course is invaluable. I know I will rely on it much. The practical information as well as the formulas for doing calculations is so important to so many aspects landscape design.
Thanks again for the time, talent and expertise you shared with our class. It was truly an educational and enjoyable two days.
Sincerely,
Vicki Schranz

Dear Stephen,
I wanted to thank you for offering your grading and drainage workshop. Because the issues discussed are so relevant to our daily functions, I greatly appreciated the information I received. I learned very practical tips which will help me immensely in my work. You were a very accessible instructor, clearly delivering the subject matter while keeping our interest throughout the 2 day seminar. We learned a lot, and had a good time doing it!
Sincerely,
